Understanding Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. These pulses target areas of the brain that are underactive in conditions such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, helping restore healthier communication between brain networks.
At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, we use FDA cleared technology in our Frisco and Southlake centers to provide safe and effective TMS treatment.
How TMS Affects the Brain
TMS works by sending magnetic pulses through a coil placed lightly against the head. These pulses are similar in strength to those used in an MRI machine and reach the regions of the brain that regulate mood, focus, and behavior.
One network often discussed in depression and anxiety is the Salience Network, which helps the brain decide what to focus on. When this network is out of sync, symptoms like low mood, poor concentration, and anxiety can worsen. TMS helps re synchronize brain activity, supporting improvements in mood and mental clarity.
What to Expect During Treatment
Each session is performed in our office. You will sit comfortably in a chair while a TMS specialist positions the magnetic coil. When pulses are delivered, you may hear a clicking sound and feel a light tapping sensation. Sessions last 20 to 40 minutes, and no anesthesia or recovery time is required.
Safety and Side Effects
TMS is FDA cleared, outpatient, and well tolerated. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort or headache, which usually improves after the first week of treatment. Unlike medications, TMS does not cause weight gain, fatigue, or memory problems.
How Effective Is TMS?
Research shows that nearly half of patients with treatment resistant depression respond to TMS, and about one third achieve full remission. Studies in OCD and pain management also demonstrate meaningful improvement for many patients.
