Is TMS Safe?

A Safe, FDA Cleared Treatment Option

Safety is one of the most common questions patients ask about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The good news is that TMS is FDA cleared and has been used safely in the United States for more than a decade. It is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure performed in a comfortable office setting.

At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, we provide TMS therapy at our Frisco and Southlake centers with protocols that meet the highest safety standards.

How Safe Is TMS Compared to Other Treatments?

TMS is often compared to medications or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Unlike medications, TMS does not cause systemic side effects such as weight gain, fatigue, or sexual side effects. Unlike ECT, TMS does not require anesthesia, does not affect memory, and allows you to return to normal activities right away.

Common Side Effects

Most patients tolerate TMS well. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort or headache during or after a session. These effects usually improve after the first week of treatment.

Some patients may also experience lightheadedness or facial muscle twitching during the session. These effects are temporary and resolve quickly once the session ends.

Rare Risks

Seizures are extremely rare with TMS. The risk is less than 0.1% when treatment is delivered according to established safety guidelines. Patients with a history of seizures or certain medical conditions will be carefully evaluated before beginning treatment.
