Ahsan Yaqoob Khan, MD, DFAPA, DABAM is a nationally recognized psychiatrist and clinical researcher with more than three decades of experience advancing the science of mental health treatment. As the Director of Clinical Research & Trials at Compassionate Psychiatric Services (CPS), Dr. Khan leads the practices research program dedicated to evaluating emerging therapies and helping shape the future of evidence-based psychiatric care.
Dr. Khan brings an exceptional depth of experience to CPS. He is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and has held major academic and clinical leadership roles, including Director of Clinical Services and Vice Chair of Clinical Services. Over the course of his career, he has participated in more than 50 clinical trials, ranging from early-phase medication studies to large, nationally funded projects such as CATIE, STAR*D, CO-MED, ACLAIMS, and other NIMH-supported research initiatives.
Through this work, Dr. Khan has contributed to research that improved diagnostic understanding, informed treatment guidelines, and shaped how clinicians across the country manage conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and neurocognitive disorders.
At CPS, Dr. Khan oversees all clinical research operations, ensuring each study prioritizes scientific rigor, participant safety, and meaningful real-world applicability. His team focuses on core goals of psychiatric research, including:
- Improving existing treatments and identifying where care can be strengthened
- Informing clinical practice by translating research insights into everyday care
- Enhancing understanding of mental illness, symptom patterns, and treatment response
- Evaluating emerging therapies, including novel medications and next-generation interventions
Clinical trials under his leadership examine key elements such as safety and side-effect profiles, treatment effectiveness, optimal dosing, mechanisms of action, and differences across patient populations. His extensive background in psychopharmacology, clinical measurement, and scientific methodology helps ensure that CPS trials meet the highest standards of quality and impact.
Dr. Khan is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has authored numerous publications, participated in DSM-5 field trials, contributed peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and presented nationally on topics ranging from depression treatment to polypharmacy, neuropsychiatry, and medication safety.
