Medical Marijuana for Mental Health in Texas with Compassionate Psychiatric Services

How CPS helps patients explore medical cannabis as part of a personalized treatment plan

Medical marijuana is becoming a more common conversation in mental health care, especially for patients who have not found relief with traditional treatments. In Texas, the rules, eligibility, and process for obtaining medical cannabis are different from many other states. At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, we understand that patients have questions about the law, whether this option could be right for them, what the process looks like, and how it may help with certain mental health conditions.

Texas Compassionate Use Program Explained by CPS

Qualifying conditions, THC limits, and the CURT registry process

In Texas, medical marijuana is legal under the Texas Compassionate Use Program (CUP). This program allows physicians registered with the state to prescribe low-THC cannabis for specific qualifying conditions. “Low-THC” means products contain no more than 1% THC by weight and must come from licensed dispensaries.

Currently, Texas law allows medical cannabis for conditions such as:

  • PTSD
  • Certain neurodegenerative disorders
  • Seizure disorders
  • Cancer
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Incurable neurodegenerative diseases

Unlike in other states, Texas patients do not receive a “medical marijuana card.” Instead, eligible patients are entered into the secure Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT) by their prescribing physician.

When cannabis may be a helpful addition to your mental health care

While medical marijuana is not a first-line treatment for mental health conditions, some patients have found it helpful for:

  • PTSD symptoms such as hypervigilance, intrusive memories, and sleep disturbances
  • Anxiety-related conditions when traditional treatments have not worked or caused intolerable side effects
  • Mood disorders in select cases where pain, insomnia, or co-occurring conditions affect daily life

Compassionate Psychiatric Services’ Approach to Medical Marijuana

A thorough, personalized evaluation to ensure medical marijuana is the right choice for your care in Texas

At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, we take a comprehensive approach to determining if medical marijuana may be an appropriate treatment for a patient in Texas. We consider the full picture, including medical history, previous treatments, current symptoms, and personal goals. Because the Texas program is condition-specific, we first confirm that the patient meets eligibility requirements. Equally important, we have an open discussion about realistic expectations and whether medical marijuana is the right tool to support the patient’s mental health plan.

How CPS Providers Decide if Medical Marijuana is Right for You

A patient-centered approach to mental health and cannabis treatment

Our providers take time to understand your unique situation. We evaluate not only whether you meet Texas legal requirements but also whether medical cannabis could fit safely into your broader mental health treatment plan. This includes discussing your goals, possible benefits, potential side effects, and how cannabis may interact with your current medications.
