Starting Spravato®? Here’s What to Know About Insurance, Side Effects, and Safety

Answers to Common Questions About Spravato® Treatment in Frisco & Southlake, TX

If you’re considering Spravato® for treatment-resistant depression, you likely have questions—not just about how it works, but about what it costs, what it feels like, and what you need to do before getting started.

At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, we’re proud to offer Spravato® treatment in Frisco and Southlake, TX, and we know how important it is to feel informed and confident in your care. This post answers the most common questions our patients ask before beginning Spravato® treatment.

Is Spravato® Covered by Insurance?

Yes, many insurance plans cover Spravato®, but coverage can vary. It’s important to check both your medical and pharmacy benefits, as the medication and treatment visits may be billed under different parts of your plan.

Here are some key questions to ask your insurance provider:

  • Is Spravato® covered under my medical or pharmacy benefit?
  • Are the treatment visits billed under behavioral health or general medical?
  • What is my co-pay or co-insurance?
  • Are certified Spravato® treatment centers in my area in-network?

At Compassionate Psychiatric Services, our team helps you verify your benefits and handles pre-authorization paperwork so there are no surprises when treatment starts.

What Is the Spravato® REMS Program—and Why Does It Matter?

Spravato® is part of a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. This means it can only be administered at certified healthcare centers like ours. The REMS program is in place because Spravato® requires monitoring due to possible sedation, dissociation, and changes in blood pressure.

When you receive Spravato® at our clinic:

  • You’ll self-administer the nasal spray under supervision
  • You’ll stay for at least two hours so we can monitor your vital signs and overall response
  • We’ll determine when it’s safe for you to leave—and ensure you have someone to drive you home

What Are the Common Side Effects of Spravato®?

Spravato® works differently from traditional antidepressants, which means it can produce side effects some patients haven’t experienced before.

Common side effects include:

  • Feeling disconnected or “spaced out”
  • Dizziness or a spinning sensation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or sleepiness
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure

These side effects typically begin shortly after treatment and fade the same day. We’ll monitor you closely and support you through the process.

Tip: Avoid eating for 2 hours or drinking for 30 minutes before your session to reduce nausea.

Can I Drive After Spravato® Treatment?

No. Because Spravato® can affect coordination and alertness, you cannot drive or operate machinery the day of your treatment. Plan to have a caregiver, family member, or trusted friend bring you to and from each session.

You should also avoid alcohol, sedatives, or other substances that affect the central nervous system unless directed by your doctor.

How to Prepare for Your First Spravato® Treatment

Here’s how to make your first session easier and more comfortable:

Bring questions — our staff is happy to explain every part of the process
